Roca Redonda
Also known as: Redonda Rock
Roca Redonda rises from very deep water about 30 km off the northwest tip of Isabela and is the top of a volcano that climbs almost 3000 m from the sea floor. Underwater there are rocks, pinnacles, lava flows and caves, and on the southeast side fumaroles release streams of gas bubbles. Schooling scalloped hammerheads, Galapagos and whitetip sharks, barracudas, jacks and sea lions are seen, with mantas and sunfish at times. Strong and unpredictable currents, down-currents and heavy surge can lead guides to cancel the dive, and the water is very cold.
