Allmannshauser Steilwand
Also known as: Allmannshauser Wand · Starnberger See - Allmannshausen - Steilwand
The wall lies in the middle of the lake's east shore near Allmannshausen and draws around 4,000 divers a year. Its break-off edge begins at about 5 m and runs out from the shore at a slant to roughly 50 m, after which the rock drops in steps to about 70 to 80 m and then becomes a slope down to the deepest point of the lake at 127.8 m. Divers hang in open water along the face with light falling over the edge above them and fish sheltering in the crevices, and eels can be watched in their holes from about 20 m. A warning sign at 40 m marks the limit for divers breathing compressed air, and a small wreck lies at around 80 m below the wall. Many fatal accidents have happened here, and an instructor of a dive school on the lake says he does not take students to the wall.
