Tonawanda

Built in 1863 in Philadelphia, the Tonawanda served as the supply ship USS Arkansas during the US Civil War, carrying mail and supplies to blockade ships along the Gulf coast. After returning to civilian service it grounded on Elbow Reef with a cargo of fish and potatoes, and wreckers salvaged what they could. NOAA describes the remains near the City of Washington as boiler structure, steam pipes, valves and a long section of the engine bedding. The wreck has become part of the reef and is one of several historic wrecks on the Elbow.
