The Gut

Also known as: Te Awaatu Channel

The channel is much shallower than the surrounding fiord basin and has a high tidal flow, which feeds dense growth of suspension feeders. Rock walls and deep reef carry red and black coral, zoanthids and lamp shells, and sea pens stand on the sandy bottom. A well-known dive plan follows the reef down to sand at about 20 m and across to a deeper reef around 35 m with a large stand of red coral, then drifts back up with the current into shallow gardens. Monitoring has found more and larger rock lobsters inside the reserve than outside it. Anchoring is prohibited over most of the reserve.
