Baixa do Sul
Also known as: South Reef
Baixa do Sul lies in the channel, roughly three miles from the Madalena islets. Its rock platforms descend in steps from the shallow top. Erosion potholes, known as giant's holes or giant pits, reach up to 8 m deep and 3 m wide. The shallow plateau is covered with peacock's tail algae and crowded with wrasse. At every depth, you may encounter bluefish, bonito, skipjack tuna, white trevally, barracuda and almaco jacks. Devil rays and ocean sunfish are also possible, and Dive Azores reports occasional manta ray sightings in August and September.
