Baixa do Sul

Baixa do Sul lies out in the channel, roughly three miles from the Madalena islets, and its rock platforms descend in steps from the shallow top. A notable feature are erosion potholes, which the sources call giant's holes or giant pits, up to 8 m deep and 3 m wide. The shallow plateau is covered with peacock's tail algae and crowded with wrasse. At every depth there is a chance of bluefish, bonito, skipjack tuna, white trevally, barracuda and almaco jacks. Devil rays and ocean sunfish are possible, and Dive Azores reports occasional manta rays in August and September.
