Motu Nui
Also known as: Moto Nui
Motu Nui is where competitors of the Tangata Manu birdman ritual swam to collect the first sooty tern egg. Underwater, coral-covered walls fall away from the islet into deep water, and its smooth grey rock looks different from the other sites around the island. Being farther from the main island, the water stays clear almost all year. Sea turtles are often seen here. Jacques Cousteau is said to have dived the islet in the 1970s.
