Catedral

Also known as: The Cathedral

From inside the cavern, sunlight shining through holes in the ceiling creates a play of light that reminded divers of a cathedral altar, which gave the site its name. Sponges cover the walls, sea urchins sit in the cracks, and light-shy fish shelter in the dim interior. Outside, white rock with live coral reflects the light, schools of surgeonfish pass by and butterflyfish appear in pairs. The RTW Guys describe overhangs and caverns resembling flying buttresses below a lava tube at Motu Tautara. Because the site lies so close to the shore, strong currents build up when the surf is heavy, and divers should be at ease in small caverns while being pushed from side to side.
