Moai Sumergido

Also known as: Moai · Underwater Moai

The statue is not an ancient carving but a modern replica. According to Mike Rapu Diving Center it was made by a Rapanui craftsman and sunk by Mike Rapu himself in honour of his grandfather Paea, who taught him his love of the sea. It rests on the sandy bottom among coral reefs and fish of many kinds, and patches of native coral have begun to grow on it. The trip out takes only a few minutes by boat from the harbour. Several dive centres and guides describe it as an easy dive that open water divers can do, which is why it is the usual choice for visitors who make only one or two dives.
