Nea Kameni Wreck

Also known as: New Volcano dive spot

Nea Kameni is the newest island of the Santorini volcano, and its last eruption was in 1956. In the bay of Taxiarchis, next to a chapel cut into the volcanic cliff, lies a small passenger ship that went down in 1981 after a mistake with its pumps. The wreck is shallow and is regularly used even by divers with little experience. Just outside the bay a lava wall falls away to about 70 m, and the broken, cooled lava gives shelter to crabs, shrimps, octopus and colourful sponges. Sources note clear water but rather sparse fish life.
