Punta Tunich
Also known as: Tunich · Tunich Wall · Tunich Reef
The current here often carries divers a long way, and local guides call it the place to go for speed. Barrel sponges, rope sponges and large elephant-ear sponges cover the slope, together with black feather hydroids that sting on contact. Schools of grunts and snappers hide in the gullies and overhangs, where glassy sweepers and a big green moray live. Grey and French angelfish, turtles and nurse sharks are regular sightings. Tunich is Mayan for stone or rock.
