Long Beach
Also known as: Long Beach Simon's Town
The bottom shelves gently from the beach, reaching about 5 m close in and about 9 m as far as most divers swim, and 18 m only at the harbour mouth. A steel barge wreck, the remains of a sports fishing boat that sank in 2009, part of a small yacht and a pipeline give shelter to octopus and crabs. Careful divers find sea hares, sand slugs, pineapplefish, gurnards and stingrays, and the site is known for unusual fish carried into False Bay from the east coast. Easy entry and exit, toilets and outdoor showers make it one of the most popular training sites around Cape Town. Because it lies next to the naval base and the yacht club, it is sometimes closed for security and a surface marker buoy is advised.
