SAS Pietermaritzburg

Also known as: PMB · HMS Pelorus

As HMS Pelorus the Algerine class minesweeper cleared mines ahead of the Normandy landings in 1944 before being sold to South Africa in 1947 and serving as a training ship. The wreck sits upright on sand about 400 m offshore, with the highest point at about 16.5 m and the sand near the stern at around 20 to 22 m. Parts of it have collapsed in winter storms, so penetration is not advised. Sea cucumbers cover nearly every surface, and octopus, cuttlefish, hottentot and klipfish are common, along with many nudibranchs.
