Mary Celestia

Also known as: Marie Celeste · Mary Celstia

Barely two years old when she went down, the Mary Celestia smuggled guns, ammunition and supplies through the Union blockade during the American Civil War. She struck a blind boiler reef at speed while under the guidance of a Bermudian pilot, and only one crew member was lost. The wreck rests on a flat sandy bottom roughly 600 yards off the south coast. The signature sight is a paddlewheel frame that still stands upright, reminiscent of a fairground wheel; the boilers, an anchor and the bow lie nearby. Storms in 2011 exposed sealed bottles of wine and perfume in the bow, and from late April into June parrotfish gather on the adjacent reef.
