Watamu Marine National Park

Kenya

One of Kenya's oldest marine protected areas, located off Watamu on the north coast, known for its coral gardens roughly 300 metres offshore and rich reef biodiversity.

Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve was established in 1968 and was later recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1979. Its coral gardens are home to an estimated 600 fish species and 110 species of stony coral. The reef system supports larger species such as whale sharks, manta rays and barracuda, and the area is an important nesting site for green and hawksbill sea turtles.
