Puerto Morelos Reef National Park protects a section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef directly offshore from the town of Puerto Morelos, known for shallow, easily accessible reef diving.
Established as a National Park in 1998 and recognized as a Ramsar wetland site in 2004, the park covers about 9,066 hectares of reef and coastal habitat. It supports around 700 species of marine fauna and more than 250 species of algae, including well-preserved elkhorn coral colonies. Diving depths within the park are mostly shallow, popular for beginner and intermediate reef diving, alongside deeper wreck diving at the sunken vessel Juan Escutia.
