The site contains the longest continuous barrier reef in the world, enclosing a lagoon of about 24,000 square kilometres with an average depth of 25 metres. The reef surrounds Grande Terre and numerous smaller islands and atolls, extending roughly 1,500 kilometres. UNESCO inscribed the property in 2008, covering six component zones including Grand Lagon Sud and Grand Lagon Nord.
