The Alternatives
The Alternatives are a line of coral pinnacles stretching east to west for about 1.5 miles along the southern edge of the Sha'ab el-Utat reef, about three miles west of Ras Mohammed. Local fishermen call them the seven pinnacles, and divers can swim from one to the next. Because the area is well protected, boats come here when conditions in the open sea are too rough. Visibility depends on the tide and drops when the current comes from the south. Large groupers, blue-spotted stingrays, squid, nudibranchs and leopard sharks are among the residents.
