MV Karwela

Launched in 1957 as the Frisia II, the ship took tourists around the Maltese Islands until 2002. Holes cut along its sides before scuttling make its decks easy to explore, and a photogenic staircase leads down to a lower deck lit through the windows. At the stern divers see the rudder, propellers and windlasses. The wreck is now covered in algae and invertebrates, with large spiral tube worms, nudibranchs on the hydroids and occasional seahorses, while dentex, barracuda and groupers circle it. It lies a short swim from shore between the Cominoland and the Xlendi, and divers finish on the shallow reef.
