SS Thistlegorm
Conosciuto anche come: Thistlegorm
The Thistlegorm was waiting at anchor for passage through the Suez Canal when two German bombers hit her aft hold on the night of 5 to 6 October 1941, and she sank upright onto a sandy seabed at about 30 m. Jacques Cousteau found the wreck in the 1950s, but it was largely forgotten until 1991. Her holds still contain BSA motorcycles, Bedford trucks, rifles, boots and aircraft parts, and steam locomotives lie on the seabed outside the hull. Day trips usually make two dives, a tour of the exterior and a guided penetration of the holds. Schools of barracuda, tuna and snappers hunt around the wreck, and currents can be strong.
