Small Crack

Also known as: Small Passage

Small Crack is the more southerly gap in the long barrier reef of Sha'ab Mahmoud, split by a coral block into two shallow channels. Twice a day the tide pushes water into and out of the lagoon, creating currents that can become extremely strong, so dives are timed to drift back towards a boat moored inside. The outer wall drops to a sandy floor with gorgonians, soft corals and large table corals, and fire coral grows thickly near the mouth. Turtles, leopard and whitetip reef sharks and summer schools of barracuda and jacks are typical, and resident flashlight fish make it a fine night dive in calm weather.
