Ceppi d'ancora di Capo Grosso

The area is thought to be part of the anchorage of the Roman fleet before the Battle of the Egadi on 10 March 241 BC, when the Romans surprised the Carthaginian fleet coming from Marettimo. Numerous lead anchor stocks, at least two iron Admiralty-type anchors of the 17th to 18th century, stone anchors and many amphora fragments are scattered over a wide rocky area about 100 m from the coast. Frequent and often strong currents make the dive medium to difficult. Visits are possible with authorised dive centres or with a permit from the Soprintendenza del Mare.
