Stepping Stones

The Stepping Stones are the signature site of Bait Reef, a mid-shelf reef inside a no-take green zone. At least 18 round, vertical-sided pinnacles of 15 to 50 m across stand in a line, each rising from 15 to 25 m almost to the surface. Plate corals cap the tops, while soft corals, gorgonian fans and sea whips cover the sides. Channels, caves and ledges between the stones hold wrasse, sweetlips, cod, trevally, coral trout, batfish and moray eels. Manta rays and other large rays are common from May to September, and tidal currents are fairly constant.
