Butterfly Bay

Butterfly Bay lies on the northern side of Hook Island and is protected from most winds. The best diving is along the western reef ledge deep in the bay, where coral outcrops form shallow walls between patches of rubble and silty sand. The finest bommie sits in the centre of the bay and is hard to find at high tide. Small colourful reef fish are everywhere, and Airlie Beach Dive Centre reports hawksbill turtles and batfish among staghorn coral gardens. Tidal currents grow stronger towards the middle of the bay.
