Tinderbox Marine Reserve
Also known as: Tinderbox
Tinderbox is sheltered, close to Hobart and protected, so fish, rock lobster and abalone have recovered strongly since the reserve was declared. Narrow rocky reefs and kelp give way to a silty shell-grit bottom; the wider reefs to the north hold the most life. Big-belly seahorses, weedy seadragons, wrasse and pink lace bryozoans are common, and at night the sediment comes alive with brittle stars, octopus and cardinalfish. Boat traffic near the ramp and occasional currents at spring tides are the only real hazards.
