Salt River Canyon West Wall
Also known as: Grouper Grotto · The Pinnacles
The West Wall lies a quarter of a mile across the canyon from the East Wall, with a chasm thousands of feet deep between them. The mooring sits in only about 20 feet, and from there the wall falls almost sheer into very deep water. Its top is a maze of coral pinnacles, swim-throughs, ledges, overhangs and sand chutes that are thought to have formed under an ancient waterfall, which is why the site is also called The Pinnacles. Creole wrasse, black durgon, yellowtail snapper and squirrelfish gather along the edge, while jacks, permits, large groupers, barracuda and rays move around the pinnacles deeper down. Dive pages describe it as good for both novice and advanced divers.
