North Monastery

Also known as: Monastery Beach North · N. Monastery Beach

Monastery Beach faces the open Pacific just north of Point Lobos, and its northern end gives shore divers the quickest access to a finger of the Carmel Canyon. Divers swim along the edge of a kelp bed past the wash rock, descend in 30 to 40 ft and follow a heading of about 350 degrees to the start of the trench, where they can follow a contour at any depth. Upwelling from the canyon often brings cold, clear water, and the reef is covered with orange cup corals and large anemones. One guide author reports a gray whale passing within 20 yards of the beach. The steep, coarse-gravel beach produces plunging waves, and sources stress diving only in calm conditions and leaving the water with the Monastery Crawl.
