McAbee Beach

McAbee Beach lies between the Breakwater and the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Cannery Row. From the sandy entry divers swim out over a shallow reef into dense kelp and rugged granite boulders that reach about 40 ft. Remains of the old cannery, including a boiler and pipes, lie close to shore, and rusted rebar in the shallows is a known hazard at the entry. Sources mention occasional metridium anemones, juvenile wolf eels, fish-eating anemones and frequent visits from harbor seals. Swimming left toward the aquarium leads on to Hopkins Reef.
