La Dieppoise
The vessel was built in Port Arthur, Canada, in 1952 and served the French Navy for 35 years, 11 of them in New Caledonia, before it was turned into an artificial reef. Its wooden hull has rotted away, which leaves the aluminium frame open and lets divers look straight into the compartments. A central corridor leads to the crew mess, and the wheelhouse is one of the classic passages of the dive. Jacks and barracuda hunt around the superstructure, groupers live on the wreck and nudibranchs such as Noumea catalai are often seen. The Calédonie Toho V lies close by north of the same reef.
