Hirokawa Maru

Also known as: Bonegi 1 · Bonegi I · B1

The Hirokawa Maru was a cargo ship converted into an armed transport, run aground near Bonegi on 15 November 1942 while trying to land troops and supplies. Storms, earthquakes and salvage have since left the hull on its port side, with the bow remains in the shallows and the stern far deeper. Hard corals cover the remaining superstructure and kingposts, and large gorgonian fans grow out from the hull. Some open deck sections allow swim-throughs with an experienced guide. Snapper, sweetlips, batfish, lionfish and fusiliers live on the wreck, and the coral-covered shallows near the bow are a good place to spend the end of the dive.
