The Conch

Also known as: Conch Wreck · Wreck Conch

The Conch was built in 1892 for Shell and is described by local operators as one of the first oil tankers in the world. On a voyage from Novorossiysk to Madras in June 1903 she struck Akarta Rock, also called Parsi Rock on the Akurala reef, and sank against it. Parts of the ship are scattered over the seabed while the hull and the large oil tanks remain in place, surrounded by boulders covered in soft corals, gorgonians and sea fans. With a dive guide, divers can enter a section of the cabin and leave on the other side, and the rocky bottom keeps silt low. Large groupers shelter inside, and titan triggerfish, giant morays, cuttlefish, angelfish and porcupinefish are common around the wreck.
