HMAS AE2 Submarine

Also known as: AE2 Submarine · HMAS AE2

AE2 was built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness and commissioned in 1914. On 25 April 1915 it became the first submarine to get through the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmara. After an encounter with the Ottoman torpedo boat Sultanhisar on 30 April it developed mechanical problems, and Commander Henry Stoker ordered it scuttled. The wreck lies in the part of the strait that opens into the Sea of Marmara, off Karaburun. Turkey and Australia have jointly installed cathodic protection to slow its corrosion.
