Vandenberg

Also known as: USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg · Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg · USS Vandenberg

The ship began as the troop transport General Harry Taylor in the Second World War and later, as the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, tracked missile and space launches; it also appeared in the 1999 film Virus. It now rests upright, with the upper structure starting at about 40 feet and the keel near 140 feet. Large radar dishes, masts, the bridge and the communications deck are the highlights, and openings cut for the sinking allow swim-throughs for trained divers. Goliath and Nassau groupers, barracuda, sharks and dense schools of fish have moved onto the hull. The wreck is the southernmost point of the Florida Keys Shipwreck Trail and needs good planning because of its depth and changing currents.
