Hens and Chickens
Also known as: Hen and Chickens · Hens & Chickens Reef
The reef consists of clustered coral heads that reminded early mariners of chicks around a hen, protecting large populations of star and brain corals, some up to 15 feet tall. A dense forest of purple sea fans grows between the mounds. Large schools of blue-striped grunts, big groupers, green morays, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks and sea turtles are reported. Because it sits close to shore in Hawk Channel, it is reachable on days when the outer reef is rough.
