City of Washington

Also known as: City of Washington Wreck

Launched in 1877, the City of Washington carried passengers and cargo between New York, Cuba and Mexico and was in Havana harbour in 1898 when the USS Maine exploded; its crew helped rescue the survivors. Later converted into a coal barge, it struck Elbow Reef while under tow in July 1917 and could not be freed. The hull sides have collapsed outward, but the keel line and the propeller shaft tunnel are still easy to recognise. Coral has grown over and under the wreck, and barracuda, moray eels, nurse sharks and black grouper live among the plates. The shallow depth makes it suitable for snorkelling and night dives.
