El Salto
El Salto lies on the Mar de las Calmas coast less than 20 minutes from La Restinga, sheltered by the surrounding volcanoes. A lava channel with canyons on both sides leads down to sand at up to 30 m, but the main attraction is shallower than 10 m around the tip of the lava tongue. There divers pass through volcanic tubes, caverns and a tunnel whose skylights throw beams of light inside. The caves hold lobsters, slipper lobsters, shrimps and the occasional nudibranch, and schools of salema swim into the tunnel. A gully along the wall is a favourite spot of trumpetfish, sometimes more than 20 together. On the few days with groundswell the tunnel and caves cannot be visited.
