Winfield Scott Wreck

Also known as: Winfield Scott

The Winfield Scott, a 225 ft side-wheel passenger steamer, struck Middle Anacapa Island in fog in 1853; all passengers survived. Salvage and time have left only scattered pieces, such as parts of a paddlewheel, the shaft and engine parts overgrown with marine life. The shallow, usually calm site is one of the few wrecks that can also be snorkeled. Garibaldi, kelp bass and sheephead live on the wreckage, and giant sea bass are occasionally seen. The wreck is a protected archaeological site in the national park, so nothing may be touched or removed.
