Thetford Reef

Thetford Reef stretches for close to 2 km as a field of scattered bommies separated by sandy channels at around 25 metres. In places the bommies meet overhead and form swim-throughs lined with gorgonian fans. Giant clams, turtles resting under ledges, stingrays, moray eels and Napoleon wrasse are among the regular sightings. Cathedral and Tusa Canyons are named as its most famous sites, and Blue Lagoon is a sheltered option. Because it is closer to Cairns and more sheltered than Milln or Flynn, boats use it as a fallback in windier conditions.
