Bajo de Fuera
Also known as: Roca del Vapor
Bajo de Fuera is a narrow submarine ridge beyond the Islas Hormigas lighthouse whose summit lies only a few metres below the surface, and it was one of the worst spots for shipwrecks in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its upper reef can be enjoyed without going below 20 m, while the slopes drop steeply to around 60 m and are strewn with wreckage of the Sirio, the Minerva and the ship known as the Nord America. Because it lies in the outer waters of the reserve, access is limited to a small number of divers per day and a buoyancy check is required. Large schools of amberjack, dentex and barracuda, hunting tuna, big groupers, sunfish and eagle rays are regularly reported. Currents can build up quickly, so local guides brief divers carefully.
