Hanifaru Bay

Also known as: Hanifaru Lagoon

The bay's reef is wider at the mouth than towards the lagoon, and this keyhole shape funnels plankton into a dense, shallow soup. From about May to November large numbers of reef manta rays gather to feed, sometimes in chains or in spiralling 'cyclone' feeding, and whale sharks join them. The bay is part of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is supervised by rangers. Visitor numbers are limited, and lights and selfie sticks are not allowed inside the bay. Outside the feeding events whitetip reef sharks, green turtles and sweetlips can be seen on the surrounding reef.
