Sombrero Island

Also known as: Sombrero

The brim of the hat continues underwater as a reef running north to south, with shallow coral gardens on top and drop-offs along the outer edges. Gorgonians, black coral bushes, barrel sponges and crinoids cover the ridges and ledges, while anthias, red-toothed triggerfish, snappers and fusiliers fill the water. Turtles are seen often and rays sometimes cruise along the deeper edges. Nudibranchs, including mating Nembrotha, give macro photographers plenty to do. Because the island lies in open water, the current can range from mild to strong, and divers can follow a ridge, drift along a wall or zig-zag through the gullies.
