The Woodpile

The Woodpile is a distinctive rock formation beside the Pinnacles on north-eastern Hook Island. The wall runs from about 5 m down to nearly 30 m at the point, and the recommended entry is midway between the beach and the point. Soft corals cover the upper wall to 5 to 7 m, while deeper down there are fewer corals but large overhangs, shallow caves and black coral trees at 10 to 15 m. Behind the wall a maze of bommies with big porites corals can be explored. Strong currents run around the point, so the site is best dived in calm weather and outside spring tides.
