Manta Ray Drop-off
Manta Ray Drop-off is a wall on Bait Reef where shallow coral leads to steep underwater cliffs. The dive follows a vertical face from about 5 m to 30 m with fissures and a chimney, and the wall itself drops much deeper. Gorgonians, soft corals, sponges, feather stars and corkscrew sea whips several metres tall at 30 to 35 m cover the face. Manta rays patrol the wall in winter, while reef sharks, turtles, Maori wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, mackerel and barracuda are present all year. Exposure to southerly winds brings strong currents, so slack water on neap tides is the time to dive it.
