Rivtow Lion

Also known as: HMRT Prudent · Riv Tow Lion

The tug was built in Selby, England, in 1940 as HMRT Prudent to tow convoy ships damaged by U-boats back to port. The Nanaimo Dive Association sank it as an artificial reef on 6 February 2005 just off Newcastle Island. Because the site is protected inside Departure Bay it stays diveable when the open Strait of Georgia is too rough for the bigger wrecks. Divers can look at the propeller and rudder, follow the railings and bridge, and pass through a short swim-through down the smokestack. Plumose anemones, swimming scallops, decorated warbonnets, shrimp, decorator crabs, lingcod and octopus live on the wreck.
