Elviscot Wreck
Also known as: Relitto di Pomonte · Elviscott · Wreck of Pomonte
The freighter hit the Scoglio dell'Ogliera on 10 January 1972 and her crew got off safely; after the bow had stayed stuck on the rock, the ship went under completely about twelve days later in heavy seas. Today she lies tilted on her starboard side at around 12 m, roughly 150 m from Pomonte beach, with the crushed bow against the rock. The bridge can be entered from above, and the engine room with its machinery is still recognisable. Sunlight falling through portholes and openings creates the light effects photographers come for. Sponges, algae and fan worms cover the steel, and bream, saddled bream and damselfish school around it while groupers, morays and congers hide in the twisted bow plates. The Consorzio Elbano Diving notes it is one of the few Elba sites that can also be reached from the shore.
