Jessie Beazley Reef

Also known as: Jessie Beazeley Reef

Jessie Beazley Reef is a reef only about half a kilometre across that lies some 20 km north-west of the North Atoll and is visited only when the sea is calm. Its name is thought to come from the Jessie Beazley, a ship lost at Tubbataha in 1872. The reef top begins at around 7 m with dense Acropora and Porites hard coral and slopes to about 12 m before a wall falls past 50 m. Whitetip, blacktip and grey reef sharks, barracuda, tuna, big groupers, Napoleon wrasse and bumphead parrotfish are common, and hammerheads have been seen. Currents can be strong, and mantas and eagle rays are looked for along the southern tip.
