Bird Island

Bird Island is a wall on the northern face of the North Atoll. It starts in 5 to 8 m of water depending on the tide and is covered with soft corals, gorgonians and large barrel sponges. Overhangs, swim-throughs and crevices break up the face, and in places sand pours down from the reef top like a small waterfall. Nurse and leopard sharks rest in small grottoes, several sharks usually lie on the sandy reef top, and manta rays, eagle rays and turtles pass by. Currents can be strong, with one corner where they hit from both sides.
