MV Lake Illawarra

Also known as: SS Lake Illawarra · Lake Illawarra

On 5 January 1975 the Lake Illawarra struck the Tasman Bridge, a span collapsed onto the ship and she sank within about 15 minutes; seven crew died. She lies almost broadside under the repaired span, with the ship's bridge at about 24 metres and the main deck near 30 metres. Light fades quickly, so a torch is needed, and the hull is covered in jewel anemones and river mud. Penetration is dangerous and only for trained wreck divers. Tasports has to approve every dive in advance, and must not touch the instruments on the bow.
