Oryoku Maru
Also known as: SS Oryoku Maru · The Hellship · The Hell Ship
The cargo liner was used to carry Allied prisoners from the Philippines to Japan and was not marked as a prisoner transport when US aircraft attacked her in Subic Bay on 15 December 1944. More than 300 prisoners died on the short voyage from Manila and in the sinking. The wreck lies about 500 m off shore near Alava Pier and was largely broken up later to protect shipping, so little of the hull is recognisable. Outflow from the Kalaklan River gives it the poorest visibility of the Subic wrecks. PhilippineDives reports that the site is now permanently closed to diving as a war grave.
