LST
Also known as: Landing Ship Tank · Landing Ship Tank (LST) · LST-559
Landing ships of this type were built to put tanks, vehicles and troops directly onto a beach, and this one was later sunk in the middle of the bay. Scubaholics identifies her as LST-559, which earned four battle stars in the Pacific before being scuttled. She sits upright with her main ramp raised; the forward and mid sections are intact around a huge vehicle deck, while the stern has collapsed into a tangle that attracts fish. Barracuda, jacks, fusiliers, batfish and a large marbled grouper are regulars. Visibility is reliably among the better ones in the bay, and earthquake damage means Scubaholics no longer regards penetration as safe.
